Chess in Amman

In Amman, chess is organised more than it is advertised. The federation keeps its rooms at Al-Hussein Sports City, where the Royal club is also reported to play; the Orthodox club on Bashir Khair Street and the municipality’s staff team field sides in the national club league, and Fuheis, north-west of the capital, has an Orthodox club of its own. University, school and deaf championships fill the calendar, and two academies teach the game.

Chess960 in Amman

The titles of Jordanian events on the tournament server for 2025 to 2027 were read for Chess960, Fischer random and Freestyle, and the same words were searched in English and in Arabic. None of the titles names the variant, and no over-the-board Chess960 event in or around Amman has come to light.

In Chess960 the pieces behind the pawns start in one of 960 shuffled orders, so prepared openings count for little and both players think for themselves from the first move. Until a Jordanian club or academy holds one, the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

No Chess960 event over the board in Amman is on record yet.

How the register is kept

This register is short, and it says so. The clubs of Amman publish little about themselves: hardly any prints an address, a weekly evening or a fee. What can be seen is the federation’s calendar and notices, the league tables and pairings that organisers upload to the public tournament server chess-results.com, and the news pages of universities and of the Ministry of Education. Every entry in this register rests on a page of that kind, and each of those pages can be opened.

Inside each list the entry with the most recent dated sign of chess comes first; the order is no verdict on quality. Where no page answers a question, the entry reads “no source says” instead of a guess. The sources and verification page explains the status lines and what was left out.

Do you play or teach chess in Amman?

Few clubs and academies here keep a page of their own, so a team that meets every week can stay out of sight. A link to a club post, a federation notice or a tournament entry that shows where you meet is all it takes to add you.
